1 Guilford Court House, Battle of
Произошла в Северной Каролине 15 марта 1781 в ходе Войны за независимость [ War of Independence] между частью Южной армии [Southern Army] и ополчением [ militia] американцев (свыше 4,4 тыс. человек) под командованием Н. Грина [Greene, Nathaniel], с одной стороны, и англичанами (свыше 2,2 тыс. человек) под командованием генерала Ч. Корнуоллиса [Cornwallis, Charles] - с другой. Англичане одержали победу, но понесли большие потери и вынуждены были прекратить наступление в центр Северной Каролины и покинуть территории обеих Каролин. Потери англичан (по разным оценкам) составили 400-600 человек. Это сражение открыло кампанию, которая после битвы при Йорктауне [Yorktown, Battle of] привела к окончанию войны. (1742-1786) Грин, НатаниэлВоенный деятель периода Войны за независимость [ War of Independence], генерал. В начале войны назначен бригадным генералом Континентальной армии [ Continental Army], вскоре стал генерал-майором, возглавил успешную операцию при Трентоне [ Trenton, Battle of] (1776). Будучи на посту главного квартирмейстера, подвергся критике Конгресса, и в 1780 ушел в отставку. После поражения Гейтса [ Gates, Horatio] под Камденом [ Camden, Battle of] (1780) Дж. Вашингтон [ Washington, George] назначил Грина командующим южной армией, которая успешно провела операции в Джорджии, а также в Северной и Южной Каролинах в 1780-82.
